Modelling can be exciting and glamorous, but without knowing the right etiquette and how to be professional, it can be tough. This blog will go through what to do and what not to do for beginners getting started in the world of professional modelling.
Do’s
The first impression you will make is with your punctuality, make sure you arrive at everything on time, or even early to avoid being late, as it shows you are serious and committed.
The next impression you will make is with your fashion style, dress neatly in a way that complements your natural beauty, avoiding excessive clothing or makeup. You should always be prepared to change your clothes during a photoshoot so bring a range of clothes if requested by the stylist/photographer.
Also, you should discuss all details such as payment, work hours and locations before the shoot to minimise the chance of any misunderstandings.
A big factor which changes your appearance on camera is your posture, you should stand up straight and not round your shoulders as it will change the way that the clothes fit.
Plus, keep your portfolio up to date with your recent and best work. Images should be high quality and reflect the versatility in your career so far. Your portfolio should mirror the type of work that you would like to do.
Additionally, maintain a positive attitude and stay professional during difficult scenarios.

Don’ts
Unless there is an emergency, don’t cancel a shoot last minute as there is commonly a whole team with money behind it, so you would be wasting a serious amount of resources.
Also, except if you have been told otherwise, don’t do your hair or makeup before a shoot as stylists, photographers and artists usually want to do this themselves. It can take hours to bring models back to a “natural condition”, so would only waste time.
Rejection is part of the modelling industry and should never be taken personally as it happens to everyone. Clients looking for specific attributes will be very selective about the models chosen, so it is not necessarily something you’ve done wrong.
Another popular “Don’t” is accepting every job. Although tempting, accepting jobs without consideration in the early stages of your career can bring issues as some jobs may not align with your personal values or beliefs. Because of this, be patient and find the right jobs for you.
Next, don’t be disrespectful on set as this can massively stain your image and hinder the amount / quality of future work.
Finally, especially for independent shoots, don’t forget about safety! Verify who you’re working with and bring someone along if something feels wrong or unsafe.
